Map Territory Conflict Resolution

thinking-map-territory

tjboudreaux/cc-thinking-skills

A systematic methodology for resolving discrepancies between conceptual models (documentation, tests, diagrams, metrics) and actual observed behavior (live code execution or real data). This process mandates that observed reality (the 'territory') always overrules the theoretical map, ensuring system integrity and accurate knowledge updates.

Calculating Margin of Safety Estimates

thinking-margin-of-safety

tjboudreaux/cc-thinking-skills

This methodology provides a comprehensive framework for estimating buffered numbers—such as capacity limits, timeframes, or budgets—when making commitments under uncertainty. It guides users to calculate a buffer based on both residual estimation error and the potential cost of failure (breach cost), ensuring resilience against costly underestimation in critical systems or plans.

Structured Model Combination Approach

thinking-model-combination

tjboudreaux/cc-thinking-skills

A systematic methodology for solving complex, multi-domain, or high-stakes problems where a single mental model creates blind spots. This process guides users to select 2-3 complementary models, assign distinct roles, define a conflict rule, and synthesize findings into a single, decision-ready recommendation.

Thinking Skill Router and Selector

thinking-model-router

tjboudreaux/cc-thinking-skills

This tool acts as a meta-skill guide, helping users systematically determine the most appropriate cognitive framework when faced with complex problem-solving tasks. It maps the problem's domain and type (e.g., diagnosis, strategy, architecture) to select the optimal primary thinking skill, preventing guesswork or arbitrary stacking of tools. It ensures the chosen method is justified by mechanism fit and relevance.

Pre-Mortem Analysis and Risk Mitigation

thinking-pre-mortem

tjboudreaux/cc-thinking-skills

A systematic planning technique that assumes a project or plan has already failed. By reasoning backward from a catastrophic outcome (in past tense), this method identifies the necessary conditions for failure. These necessary conditions are then inverted into concrete, verifiable preventive requirements, gates, and mitigation strategies, ensuring proactive risk management before execution begins.

Probabilistic Thinking and Forecasting Methods

thinking-probabilistic

tjboudreaux/cc-thinking-skills

A rigorous framework for making evidence-based estimates and forecasts when precise data is unavailable. It guides users to anchor predictions on base rates, articulate uncertainty using confidence intervals, and systematically update beliefs using likelihood ratios (prior to posterior) as new evidence arrives. Ideal for risk sizing, project timelines, and strategic decision-making.

Red Team Security Assessment Framework

thinking-red-team

tjboudreaux/cc-thinking-skills

A rigorous method for authorized adversarial security review. It models the attacker, maps the entire attack surface (APIs, auth flows, data handling), and generates reports containing only findings with a concrete, reproducible exploit path and verified mitigation steps. Essential for pre-launch hardening and critical system reviews.

Systematic Hypothesis Testing Framework

thinking-scientific-method

tjboudreaux/cc-thinking-skills

A rigorous methodology for debugging complex anomalies or incidents when multiple plausible causes exist. It guides the user to enumerate competing, falsifiable hypotheses and prioritizes running the cheapest, most discriminating observation first. By iteratively eliminating hypotheses and preferring the least-assumptive survivor, it systematically localizes the root cause efficiently.

Analyzing Second-Order Consequence Chains

thinking-second-order

tjboudreaux/cc-thinking-skills

A rigorous framework for tracing the full systemic consequence chain of strategic decisions. It guides users beyond the immediate, intended first-order effects to anticipate delayed impacts, incentive shifts, and complex problems that only emerge at scale or over time, ensuring decisions are robust against unforeseen systemic risks.

Systems Mapping And Leverage Analysis

thinking-systems

tjboudreaux/cc-thinking-skills

A comprehensive methodology for diagnosing complex systems where problems are emergent across multiple components. It guides the user to map system boundaries, stocks and flows, feedback loops, and underlying structural drivers. By identifying the highest feasible leverage point, it recommends structural interventions that address root causes rather than superficial symptoms.

Theory of Constraints For System Optimization

thinking-theory-of-constraints

tjboudreaux/cc-thinking-skills

This methodology provides a structured approach to identifying the single binding constraint (bottleneck) that limits overall system throughput or increases latency. Rather than attempting local optimization everywhere, users must systematically apply the six steps (Exploit, Subordinate, Elevate, etc.) to focus efforts on the most critical choke point, ensuring efficient resource allocation across complex workflows.

Structured Thought Experiment for System Analysis

thinking-thought-experiment

tjboudreaux/cc-thinking-skills

This methodology allows engineers and analysts to conduct controlled counterfactual simulations when real-world testing (such as catastrophic failures, extreme load, or irreversible changes) is too rare, costly, or impossible. By isolating a single variable and tracing the mechanistic chain step-by-step, it helps surface critical system breakpoints, invariants, and necessary controls before deployment.
