A comprehensive guide for structuring and defending the methodological design of social science manuscripts, particularly for high-impact journals like AJS. It covers diverse traditions—including quantitative, comparative-historical, ethnographic, and network analysis—ensuring the design rigorously supports the theoretical claim, rather than just presenting data. Use this when justifying case selection, identifying assumptions, or linking field observations to major theoretical arguments.

This guide helps researchers transform raw empirical findings into portable, discipline-level theoretical contributions suitable for top-tier sociology journals like AJS. It structures the argument by defining core concepts, articulating causal mechanisms, setting scope conditions, and ensuring the theoretical move is generalizable beyond the initial case study.

The American Journal of Sociology (AJS) prizes theoretical ambition and general significance over subfield novelty. This guide provides a rigorous framework and a four-part test to help researchers pressure-test their ideas. It assesses whether a project engages with the broadest sociological debates, possesses a portable theoretical payoff, and is framed for the most appropriate academic venue (AJS vs. ASR).

This skill serves as the central workflow router for manuscripts submitted to the American Journal of Sociology (AJS). It guides authors through the entire academic lifecycle, from initial topic selection and theoretical framing to research design, data analysis, and final submission/rebuttal. It helps authors determine the appropriate next step based on the manuscript type (research article, comment, reply) and current stage, ensuring the work meets AJS's high standard for theoretical ambition and sociological dialogue.

This guide provides comprehensive instructions for authors submitting to the American Journal of Sociology (AJS). It details AJS's unique house style (which is NOT the ASA style guide), covering citation mechanics, note formatting, reference lists, and manuscript structure. Crucially, it advises writers on how to structure their arguments to be theoretically ambitious and legible to a generalist audience, ensuring the core contribution is immediately apparent.

A comprehensive guide for addressing rigorous academic peer review feedback, especially for top-tier journals. It provides a structured, point-by-point framework for authors to revise their work, focusing on strengthening the core theoretical framework, integrating coverage gaps, establishing critical attitude, and maintaining scholarly balance. Use this when responding to major revisions or full-review referee reports.

This guide helps position academic manuscripts for a broad, four-field anthropological audience (sociocultural, archaeology, biological, linguistic). It teaches how to move beyond simple literature reviews by engaging the live scholarly conversation, challenging the dominant canon, and connecting disparate subfields to demonstrate a clear, theoretical contribution.

This skill guides the transformation of rich fieldwork data, material evidence, or linguistic observations into portable, theoretical arguments suitable for high-level anthropological publishing. It structures the conceptual framework, defining core concepts, interpretive mechanisms, and scope conditions, ensuring the contribution moves beyond mere description to generate cross-subfield theoretical insights.

This skill guides researchers to pressure-test their anthropological project's suitability for a major journal like American Anthropologist (AA). It emphasizes achieving "four-field reach"—ensuring the findings matter broadly to all subfields (sociocultural, archaeology, biological, linguistic)—rather than being merely novel within a single niche. Use it before committing to fieldwork or writing to assess global impact, theoretical contribution, and ethical rigor.

This guide helps researchers structure their discussion section and manuscript to explicitly articulate the theoretical contribution, moving beyond simple results reporting. It teaches how to identify, claim, and frame various types of theoretical advancements (e.g., new mechanisms, boundaries, or integrating literatures), ensuring the paper meets the high standards of top-tier academic journals like AMJ.

Provides a structured guide for positioning academic manuscripts within ongoing theoretical debates. It teaches authors how to move beyond simple 'gap-spotting' by identifying tensions, challenging assumptions (problematization), or testing boundaries between established theories. Essential for improving the theoretical rigor and argumentation of submissions to top-tier management journals.

This guide provides comprehensive methodological frameworks for designing rigorous empirical studies suitable for top-tier academic journals. It helps researchers match theoretical claims (e.g., causal effects, cross-level dynamics) to appropriate designs (experiments, panel data, qualitative analysis). It details how to proactively address major threats like Common-Method Bias, Endogeneity, and inconsistent levels of analysis, ensuring high internal and external validity.
